E-Biking to El Acebuchal: Frigiliana, the Sierra Almijara & a Legendary Lunch

Some destinations are so remote that reaching them becomes half the adventure. El Acebuchal, the legendary "Lost Village" hidden deep in the Sierra Almijara, is exactly that kind of place — and thanks to premium e-bikes, it's now within reach of far more riders than the steep terrain would normally allow.

The climb to Frigiliana

The route leaves Nerja on a quiet, gently ascending asphalt road towards the mountainous interior, with regular stops to take in panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the Nerja coastline. The first real highlight is Frigiliana itself — widely considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, with its whitewashed Moorish streets practically built for a coffee stop and a wander with the bike in hand.

Off-road into the Natural Park

From Frigiliana, the tour leaves the asphalt behind and enters the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park proper. The smooth road gives way to an unpaved, dusty forest track through fragrant pine forests and wild Mediterranean herbs — the kind of terrain where the electric assistance really earns its keep, turning what would otherwise be a serious climb into a manageable, enjoyable ride.

Arrival in El Acebuchal

The trail eventually descends into the hidden valley where the whitewashed village of El Acebuchal is nestled — rebuilt from ruins by the descendants of its original residents after being abandoned for decades. Lunch here is at the renowned Restaurante El Acebuchal, famous across the region for its rich family-menu meals: typical regional dishes, homemade bread and local olive oil.

An easy way back

Thanks to smart routing, the return journey requires very little heavy climbing after lunch — mostly a smooth, gliding, downhill ride back towards the coast and into Nerja.
