Hiking La Maroma: Conquering the Roof of Málaga

Hiking La Maroma: Conquering the Roof of Málaga

If you're looking for the single most rewarding day hike in the province of Málaga, La Maroma is it. Known locally as the "Roof of Málaga", this 2,069-metre limestone giant rises dramatically above the Axarquía, and reaching its summit is a genuine mountaineering achievement — without requiring technical climbing skills.

The route

The classic route starts at the Cortijuelo parking area and climbs through shaded pine forests along the PR-A 352 trail. As you gain altitude, the dense forest gradually gives way to dramatic, rocky limestone landscapes typical of the high sierra. It's a steady, honest climb of around 18.5 kilometres in total — demanding, but achievable for hikers with good fitness and sturdy footwear.

Reaching the summit

Standing on La Maroma's summit means standing on the highest point in the entire province of Málaga. On a clear day, the views stretch across the Axarquía hills all the way to the Mediterranean. Along the way, look out for the historic Neveras — ancient ice caves where ice harvesters once collected snow in winter to transport down to the coast, long before refrigeration existed.

The descent into Canillas de Aceituno

Rather than backtracking the way you came, the classic route descends the southern face of the mountain directly into the white village of Canillas de Aceituno. This stretch offers some of the best views of the entire hike — unobstructed panoramas across the Axarquía all the way to the coast — before you step straight off the mountain trail and into the village's flower-filled, narrow streets. There's something deeply satisfying about finishing a mountain hike on foot in a village square rather than at a car park.
