Morocco in 9 Days: From Marrakesh to the Sahara

Few destinations pack in as much contrast as Morocco. In the space of nine days, a single journey can take you from the pink-walled souks of Marrakesh, over the High Atlas Mountains, into the golden dunes of the Sahara, and finally through the imperial medina of Fes — with kasbahs, gorges and Berber villages in between.

Marrakesh: the Red City

Most journeys begin in Marrakesh, where the Jardin Majorelle, a horse-drawn carriage ride and the labyrinthine souks set the tone for what's ahead. It's a city that rewards slow wandering just as much as guided sightseeing.

Into the Atlas: Ourika Valley & the Tizi n'Tichka Pass

From Marrakesh, the route climbs into the Ourika Valley, past the Anima Gardens and traditional Berber villages, before crossing the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass — one of the great road journeys of North Africa — down towards Ouarzazate and the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou.

Dades Valley, Todra Gorge & the Sahara

The journey continues through the Dades Valley and the towering Todra Gorge before reaching the true highlight of the trip: two nights camping at the edge of the Sahara Desert near Merzouga. Watching the sun set — and rise — over the dunes is the kind of experience that tends to define the entire trip in people's memories.

Midelt & Fes: the imperial finale

From the desert, the route heads north through Midelt towards Fes, Morocco's spiritual and cultural capital. The Fes medina, with its ancient souks, traditional tanneries and imperial city heritage, is one of the best-preserved medieval cities anywhere in the world — a fitting, atmospheric close to the trip.

What makes it work

The magic of a Morocco trip like this lies in the sheer range of landscapes and cultures it covers in such a short time — desert, mountains, medieval cities and Berber villages, without ever feeling rushed, thanks to a route designed around comfortable overnight stops.
