4 Days in Porto, Braga & Guimarães: The Ultimate Northern Portugal Itinerary

Northern Portugal is one of those regions that quietly outshines its own reputation. Porto's riverside charm, Braga's baroque grandeur and Guimarães' medieval streets pack an extraordinary amount of history, food and scenery into a very compact area — which is exactly why a 4-day trip works so well here.

Day 1: Arrival in Porto

Most trips start with a flight or shuttle into Porto, followed by a first evening stroll through the city's vibrant streets and a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. It's the perfect gentle introduction before the busier days ahead.

Day 2: The Highlights of Porto

This is the day to fall in love with Porto. Highlights include:

  • The stunning azulejo tilework at São Bento Train Station
  • Panoramic views from the Clérigos Tower
  • The majestic Porto Cathedral (Sé)
  • The famous Lello Bookstore, one of the most beautiful in the world
  • The lively Mercado do Bolhão for local delicacies

In the afternoon, wander the medieval Ribeira district and cross the Luís I Bridge before ending the day with a scenic cruise along the Douro River, taking in all six of Porto's bridges from the water.

Day 3: Port Wine, Views & Gastronomy

No visit to Porto is complete without crossing the river to Vila Nova de Gaia, home to the world's most famous Port Wine Houses such as Cálem, Sandeman and Ferreira. A standard tour and tasting here is a must. Afterwards, ride the Gaia Cable Car for the best panoramic photos of the city, then wander the trendy Mercado Bom Sucesso for fresh snacks and drinks.

Day 4: Braga & Guimarães, the Cradle of Portugal

The final full day heads inland to two of the north's most historic gems. In Braga, the religious capital of Portugal, the highlight is the magnificent Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary with its monumental baroque stairway. In Guimarães, often called the birthplace of the Portuguese nation, you'll explore a beautifully preserved historic centre and the legendary Guimarães Castle, perched high on a hill above the town.

Practical tips

A comfortable 4-star hotel in central Porto makes a great base for the whole trip, so you only pack and unpack once. Bring comfortable walking shoes — cobblestones are everywhere — and leave room in your suitcase for a bottle of Port wine to bring home.

Porto rewards travellers who wander without a fixed plan just as much as those who follow a tight itinerary — the trick is building in enough free time to do both.
