E-Biking in the Mountains for Beginners: 10 Tips for Your First Ride

An e-bike makes the mountains of Andalusia accessible to almost everyone. But if you are used to flat bike paths, the steep roads of the Axarquía can feel intimidating at first. These ten tips will help you enjoy your first ride with confidence.

Before you set off

1. Get the bike set up properly

A correct saddle height makes pedalling much more efficient. When we deliver your rental bike, we adjust it for you — tell us if anything feels uncomfortable.

2. Learn the assistance modes

Most e-bikes have several levels, from Eco to Turbo or Boost. Practise switching between them on a quiet road before tackling a big climb.

3. Plan your battery use

Range depends on terrain, rider weight and assistance level. Use Eco on flat sections and save the higher modes for steep climbs. Always start with a full battery.

On the road

4. Shift gears like on a normal bike

The motor helps, but you still need to change gears. Shift to a lighter gear before a climb, not halfway up.

5. Brake early on descents

E-bikes are heavier than normal bikes. Use both brakes evenly, brake before corners rather than in them, and keep your speed under control on long descents.

6. Start on a slope the smart way

Starting uphill? Choose a light gear and a low assistance mode, so the bike doesn't jump forward.

7. Ride predictably

Mountain roads are often narrow. Ride single file, keep right and be extra careful in blind corners.

Comfort and safety

8. Drink before you're thirsty

The Andalusian sun is strong, even in spring and autumn. Bring plenty of water and refill at village fountains.

9. Always wear a helmet

Wearing a helmet is safer and strongly recommended on every ride.

10. Start with a short route

Choose an easy loop for your first ride, such as Cómpeta – Canillas de Albaida – Árchez, described in the best e-bike routes from Cómpeta.
