Hiking around Cómpeta: Trails in the Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara & Alhama

Cómpeta is not only a cycling base — it is also one of the best starting points for hiking in the Axarquía. The village lies on the edge of the natural park of the Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama, a rugged landscape of limestone and marble peaks, pine forests and deep gorges.

Easy walks

Cómpeta – Canillas de Albaida

A gentle walk between two white villages, partly along old mule paths and through vineyards. Perfect for a half day, with lunch in Canillas de Albaida.

Along the river to Árchez

Descend from Canillas de Albaida along the river valley towards Árchez and its famous minaret. Shady sections and small bridges make this a pleasant walk even in warmer months.

Moderate hikes

El Acebuchal

The "lost village" of El Acebuchal, abandoned in the 1940s and later rebuilt, can be reached on foot through the Sierra Almijara. Read the full story in El Acebuchal: Hiking to Andalusia's Lost Village.

Puerto de Cómpeta

A steady climb above the village to the mountain pass, with ever wider views over the Axarquía and the sea.

Challenging hikes

El Lucero

The summit of El Lucero (around 1,780 metres) is one of the most iconic peaks in the region, with the ruins of an old Guardia Civil post on top. On clear days you can see the Sierra Nevada and sometimes even the coast of Africa. It is a long and demanding hike, best done with good preparation or a guide.

La Maroma

The highest point in Málaga province at 2,069 metres. See our article Hiking La Maroma.

Best time to hike

Spring (March to May) and autumn (October and November) are ideal, with mild temperatures and green landscapes. In summer, start at dawn and avoid the hottest hours. Winter can be lovely and clear, but the high peaks can occasionally see snow.

Hike with a local guide

Our guided hiking tours range from a relaxed half-day walk to a full-day mountain hike, adapted to your level and pace. Combine hiking with a few days of e-biking — read more about e-bike rental in Cómpeta.
