With more than 300 sunny days a year, the Axarquía is a cycling destination you can enjoy almost year-round. Still, each season has its own character. Here is when to go and what to expect.
Spring (March – May): the favourite
For many riders, spring is the perfect season. Temperatures are pleasant, the hills are green and wildflowers line the roads. Ideal for long rides in the mountains and the white villages. Book early, as this is a popular period.
Summer (June – September): ride early
Summer is hot, especially inland in July and August. Plan your rides in the early morning and finish before midday, or stick to the coast where a sea breeze keeps things fresher. An e-bike is a big advantage now: you sweat less on the climbs. Don't miss the Noche del Vino in Cómpeta on 15 August — read our Cómpeta travel guide.
Autumn (October – November): golden light
Autumn brings comfortable temperatures again and often beautiful, clear days. The grape harvest and the drying of Moscatel raisins give the landscape around Cómpeta a special atmosphere. An excellent time for both cycling and hiking.
Winter (December – February): mild and quiet
Winters on the coast are mild, with plenty of sunny days that are perfect for cycling. Inland and in the mountains it can be chilly, especially in the morning, so bring layers. The roads are quiet and the light is beautiful.
