High in the hills of the Axarquía, about 20 kilometres inland from Torrox, lies Cómpeta: a classic Andalusian white village with steep cobbled streets, flower-filled balconies and views all the way to the Mediterranean. It is popular with walkers, cyclists and anyone looking for authentic Spain away from the busy coast. Here is our guide to the village.
The village centre
The heart of Cómpeta is the Plaza Almijara, dominated by the church of La Asunción with its tall brick tower. The square is lined with cafés and restaurants and is the place to be in the evening. From there, narrow streets lead uphill, revealing small squares and viewpoints at every turn.
Moscatel wine and the Noche del Vino
Cómpeta is famous for its sweet Moscatel wine, made from grapes grown on the steep slopes around the village. Every year on 15 August the village celebrates the Noche del Vino (Night of Wine), with music, flamenco, grape treading and free wine for visitors. It is one of the liveliest festivals in the Axarquía.
